We are pleased to invite you on a nine-night journey of discovery through the heart of the Alps and the storied Rhine River via a unique combination of rail and river travel. Spend four days exploring Europe’s most majestic scenery from the idyllic Swiss resorts of Lucerne and Zermatt. Ride up Mount Pilatus; cross the mountainous backbone of Switzerland aboard the celebrated and luxurious Glacier Express and view the ice-carved pinnacle of the Matterhorn from the Gornergrat Bahn, Switzerland’s oldest and steepest cog railway. In Lucerne, enjoy two nights in the Victorian-style Hotel Schweizerhof and in Zermatt, spend two nights in a charming, traditional chalet hotel.
Travel overland from Zermatt through the countryside and medieval villages of Switzerland to Basel, and then cruise to Amsterdam aboard the deluxe M.S. Amadeus Symphony, one of Europe’s finest sailing ships. View the treasures of a river known as the cultural crossroads of half a continent, the meeting point of the Latin and Germanic worlds. Stroll through the narrow streets of medieval university towns, visit the Cologne Cathedral, and enjoy glasses of Riesling, the Rhine’s famous white wine, in streetside cafes.
This exceptional journey through the heart of Europe includes walking tours of Lucerne, Strasbourg’s historic Old Town, the UNESCO World Heritage site of the medieval town Rudesheim, and Cologne’s Old Town, as well as a cable car excursion up Mount Pilatus with lunch at its summit restaurant, and stops during our rail journey at Lake Geneva’s exclusive retreat of Montreaux and the medieval village of Gruyere.
