MHC Moment: September 2013

President Pasquerella attended the unveiling of the new Dale Chihuly glass sculpture in the atrium of the library. The Mount Holyoke community joined her and Art Museum Director John Stomberg in toasting the new artwork, which was donated to Mount Holyoke by an anonymous alumna from the class of 1937.

Open in SEA for nearly 2 years now, at foot of the Space Needle is fine Chihuly exhibit and outdoor garden. And in Tacoma is the Museum of Glass with working hot shop and the Chihuly Bridge over the hiway.

  2. I too am familiar with Dale Chihuly’s fabulous work from installations at the Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh and the New York Botanical Garden. I am thrilled to learn that the Mount Holyoke Library is honored to display a prominent piece of his most elegant art. Passing by this sculpture will brighten the day for students and professors. Many thanks to the generous alum who made this inspired donation.

I love the Chihuly work. There was a large exhibit at the Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh several years ago. Some of the flowers were actually his glass works. He does such a huge variety of work, huge like that piece to small things like frogs and people. I use some of the work from that show as my facebook ID picture. Delightful show. Congratulations on having some at the library! And many thanks to Anonymous, ’37!
