SUMMARY:Leah Glasser Discussion (Los Altos Hills\, CA)
DESCRIPTION:Join the MHC club of northern California for a discussion led by Leah Blatt Glasser\, entitled “Haunted Lovers\, Haunted Houses\, Haunted Lives.” \nMary E. Wilkins Freeman attended Mount Holyoke in 1837 and changed her writing style from realism to gothic in order to subvert the ideology of female domesticity. Within the framework of the gothic tale\, frustrated lovers\, childless women\, married women\, widows\, and spinsters alike could be visited by uncanny ghosts whose appearances exposed the discrepancy between idealized expectations and the realities of women’s lives. Her use of ghosts and haunted houses became the tool for exposing the anxieties\, even fears\, evoked by traditional expectations. \nLeah Blatt Glasser teaches American literature and creative writing in the English department at Mount Holyoke College. Glasser received her PhD from Brown University in 1982. Please email Anne Raphael (anne@raphaelconsulting.com) for address and directions.
