SUMMARY:The Lindisfarne Gospels (Britain)
DESCRIPTION:Michelle Brown—one of the foremost authorities on illuminated manuscripts—will give an illustrated talk on one of the greatest treasures in the world\, the Lindisfarne Gospels\, on Thursday\, March 20\, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Artworkers’ Guild\, located in Queen Square\, Bloomsbury. (The nearest tube is Russell Square.) \nMs. Brown gave a wonderful lecture on illuminated manuscripts last June as part of the Vassar Classroom Revisited at the British Library\, and has been invited back by the Vassar club of the UK by special request. She travelled with the Gospels when they went to a special exhibition at Durham Cathedral. \nThe evening will begin with wine and light snacks in the distinctive setting of the Artworkers’ Guild\, located in Queen Square\, Bloomsbury. The Guild was founded in 1884 by twenty-five painters\, architects\, sculptors\, designers\, and craftsmen who challenged the strict confines established by the Royal Academy. Like their fellow member\, William Morris\, who served as master in 1892\, they also sought a role in society. The premises have examples of the Guild’s craftsmanship; it is also the venue for temporary exhibitions. \nThe illustrated talk will begin at 7:15 p.m.\, but drinks will start being served at 6:30 p.m. \nPlease RSVP to Sara Hebblethwaite (sara.hebblethwaite@virgin.net) by March\, 13\, 2014.

The group generally meets the last Sunday of every month. Please email Sunny Suh ’91 at sunny@e-suh.com if you are interested in joining us this time.\n
