SUMMARY:Club of Hartford Book Event with Author Robin McLean '87 (Manchester\, CT)
DESCRIPTION:Robin McLean ’87 will sign copies of her book Reptile House. Copies will be on sale at the signing and are also available on Amazon. Wine and cheese will be served. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, but Mount Holyoke alumnae will be especially interested in meeting Robin and Annmarie\, who both have unusual and inspiring career paths. Robin was a lawyer and then a potter before earning an MFA in creative writing\, teaching writing at Clark University\, and becoming an award-winning writer. Reptile House won the 2013 BOA Short Fiction Prize and was twice a finalist for the Flannery O’Connor Short Story Prize. \nAnnmarie Merritt ’87\, owner of The Silver Chest\, was a student activities coordinator and career counselor in a college setting before deciding that she should open a bead store to make herself happy in the future. The Silver Chest is a jewelry-making supply store selling beads\, findings and the handmade craft items of forty-four local artists\, including paintings\, pottery\, stained glass\, and blankets.

DESCRIPTION:Our next alumnae gathering in this charming university city will feature a range of thought-provoking lectures and cultural events\, offering participants the opportunity to experience different aspects of Belgian culture. \nCultural workshops on Friday will include a tour of  Brussels and Leuven\, as well as a visit to the Stella Artois brewery and a chocolate making workshop. The official kick-off of the Symposium will take place during the festive reception hosted by the Mayor of Leuven at City Hall\, one of the best-known Gothic town halls worldwide. \nThe Saturday conference will be held at the Leuven University Library and will focus on the evolution of the power of Europe and of the European Union and its influence on different areas of society and world developments. Learn more here.

SUMMARY:Club of the Peninsula Mountain Day hike (Saratoga\, CA)
DESCRIPTION:Join us and celebrate Mountain Day with a local hike at Villa Montalvo on Saturday\, October 3\, at 10:00 a.m. \nWe’ll meet at Lot 4 and set off promptly after introductions. Our hike is about two and a quarter miles in length\, with an excursion to Lookout Point and a stroll around Orchard Trail. Most of the trail is woody and shaded. The hike is easy for most; there is one short\, steep portion. We will take our time\, and wait at intersections to regroup. Family and friends are welcome to join us. See attached image for actual hike layout. \nBring a picnic to enjoy on the Villa Montalvo lawn afterwards if you wish. \nTo get to Villa Montalvo: From Highway 85\, take the Saratoga Avenue exit and proceed about two miles on Saratoga Avenue toward the town of Saratoga. At Saratoga (just before downtown)\, turn left onto Los Gatos Saratoga Road. Travel a half mile southeast and turn right on Montalvo Road. \nFrom 17/880\, take the Highway 9 exit and follow Highway 9 through Los Gatos toward Saratoga for\nthree and a half miles. Turn left onto Montalvo Road. \nFollow Montalvo Road to Villa Montalvo and go past the arts center to Lot 4. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 17 at Noon\nThe Farm at Swan’s Trail \nLocated 35 miles away in Snohomish\, we will be spending the afternoon picking fruit and enjoying the fall. Family friendly\, so bring the kiddos. After\, we can pop by their cute downtown for snacks and maybe a drink. \nThe Farm’s famed Washington State Corn Maze is a 12-acre map of the state that shows actual roads\, places and towns. DESCRIPTION:The Class of 1972 will be having a mini-reunion in Richmond\, Virginia\, October 23-25\, 2015.  We are expecting 80-100 classmates and their guests to be in attendance. \nOur schedule will include a Sunday morning talk by Dr. Edward Peeples\, Associate Professor Emeritus of Preventive Medicine and Community Health at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). \n“Ed” is now 80\, has a remarkable sense of humor and has personally lived and participated in much of the change that has occurred in the southern states\, Virginia\, and specifically Richmond. \nHe\, with Nancy MacLean of Duke University\, has recently written a memoir titled Scalawag: A White Southerner’s Journey through Segregation to Human Rights Activism. \nOriginally recommended as a possible “group read” by a classmate who lives in Massachusetts\, Scalawag is a wonderful\, insightful look at the prevailing values of the area and the era; the realities of the past and the prospects for the future through the eyes of one of its most active participants. \nThose of us who have read the book were so taken with it and the character of its author that we decided to invite him to speak to us.\nHe has graciously accepted\, despite his aversion to mornings! \nWe have reserved a room at our host hotel\, The Omni Richmond\, for Sunday morning\, October 25.  The room will have space for our mini reunion attendees as well as local alumnae and their guests. \nMore details regarding time\, place and RSVP requirements will be forthcoming.  However\, we wanted to contact all now so that you will have time to read and secure the book.\nYou will hear from us in September at which time you will be able to reserve your space. \n
