SUMMARY:Bio-Hazard Performance (Washington\, DC)
DESCRIPTION:Join DC-area alumnae for a one-woman show by Sarah Greer ’92 on Sunday\, October 12 at the State Theater in Falls Church\, Virginia. The performance is a benefit for the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI) of Northern Virginia\, as part of its annual Comedy Night fundraiser. The gala will feature cocktails\, hors d’oeuvres\, a silent auction\, and a raffle. \n“Bio-Hazard” is the true-to-life story of Sarah Elizabeth Greer\, a free spirit who grew up feeling like she just didn’t belong. Raised in the quiet Pennsylvania Dutch town of New Holland\, Sarah’s world is turned upside down when her quirky\, over-the-top Greek biological mother crashes into her life. The spark between Sarah and her “bio” brings Sarah the sudden promise of understanding\, connection\, and new meaning to her existence\, but it ends up propelling her into confusion\, an identity crisis\, and the all-too-familiar feelings of rejection. Ultimately\, Sarah’s journey of feeling lost\, being found\, and getting lost all over again\, sends her on a hilarious\, moving\, and often pathologically extreme quest to try to come to terms with her life and overall purpose in the world. \nEvent Details\nTickets: $60 VIP\, $25 Regular Admission — please click here to purchase tickets.\nDoors open at 7:00 p.m.; performance begins at 8:00 p.m. \nVIP ticket holders are also invited to attend a reception\, starting at 6:00 p.m. \nSeating at the theater will be in tables\, rather than traditional theater seating. NAMI has graciously offered to hold tables for Mount Holyoke alumnae attending the event. Please RSVP by Wednesday\, October 8 to ensure seating with the MHC Club of Washington\, DC group.

SUMMARY:Katy Simpson Smith ’06 Reading (The Odyssey Bookshop)
DESCRIPTION:The Odyssey welcomes Katy Simpson Smith ’06 for her debut novel\, The Story of Land and Sea. Set in a small coastal town in North Carolina during the waning years of the American Revolution\, this incandescent debut novel follows three generations of family–fathers and daughters\, mother and son\, master and slave\, characters who yearn for redemption amidst a heady brew of war\, kidnapping\, slavery\, and love. Drawn to the ocean\, ten-year-old Tabitha wanders the marshes of her small coastal village and listens to her father’s stories about his pirate voyages and the mother she never knew. Since the loss of his wife Helen\, John has remained land-bound for their daughter\, but when Tab contracts yellow fever\, he turns to the sea once more. Desperate to save his daughter\, he takes her aboard a sloop bound for Bermuda\, hoping the salt air will heal her. In this elegant\, evocative\, and haunting debut\, Katy Simpson Smith captures the singular love between parent and child\, the devastation of love lost\, and the lonely paths we travel in the name of renewal. \nKaty Simpson Smith was born and raised in Jackson\, Mississippi. She attended Mount Holyoke College and received a PhD in history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an MFA from the Bennington Writing Seminars. She has been working as an adjunct professor at Tulane University and is the author of We Have Raised All of You: Motherhood in the South\, 1750-1835. She lives in New Orleans.
