Making Icons: An Alumna’s Passion (Springfield)
April 5, 2014 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
This special event, led by Sarah Gorsky, will take a look at the fascinating craft of icon painting. A Medievalist at MHC, Sarah will touch on the dogma, history, methods, and materials of the practice. Sarah explains, “Several years after receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from UMASS Amherst, I decided I wanted indulge my deep interest in the Medieval society and art. I found Mount Holyoke’s Frances Perkins Scholar program for post baccalaureate studies and began my pursuit of a second bachelor’s degree in Medieval Studies, obtained in 2010. As part of this interest, I pursued an independent study on the medium of egg tempera and icon painting. While not an artist myself, I am fascinated by the egg tempera medium, the method and meaning of icons, and I’m working on building my skill on secular subjects in this medium.” Address available upon RSVP to invitation.
